Davis Leads Mental Health Advocacy as Torchbearer for AAMU’s 150th

As Alabama A&M University celebrates 150 years of excellence, Dr. Tonya Davis has become a Torchbearer in the University's historic $150 million fundraising campaign, which aims to secure $15 million in individual contributions by December 2025.

“I chose to donate in order to help create a pipeline that attracts and prepares the next generation of skilled mental health practitioners, researchers and thought leaders,” said Davis. “These individuals will not only serve our communities with compassion and competence, but also shape the innovations and policies that define the future of mental wellness in perpetuity.”

A proud alumna, Davis earned her Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Alabama A&M University after completing her sociology degree at Auburn University. She went on to earn multiple advanced degrees from the University of Alabama, including a doctorate in school psychology, an Ed.S. in School Psychometry, and a master’s in educational psychology. Today, she serves as the Associate Professor and Chairperson of AAMU’s Department of Psychology and Counseling.

“I believe in giving back to the institution that helped shape both my purpose and my profession,” Davis reflects. “As an alumna and now Chair of the very department where I was trained, I understand the transformational impact that intentional investment can have – not just on individual students, but on entire communities.”

Davis also owns Alliance Counseling & Consulting Services, where she has spent two decades providing psychological services to both children and adults. Her expertise has been sought by organizations ranging from local schools to the Missile Defense Agency and the United States Secret Service. In addition to her leadership roles on campus, she is a licensed professional counselor supervisor, a certified forensic mental health evaluator, and a mental performance consultant currently supporting a local high school football team.

As a Torchbearer, Davis is part of a national series of receptions uniting alumni and friends of Alabama A&M to raise $25,000 per event. The ultimate goal is to inspire a lasting culture of giving – one that uplifts the University and empowers future generations of students.

“To me, this campaign represents the legacy of resilience, excellence, and innovation that has defined AAMU for a century and a half – and the responsibility we carry to build on that legacy with intention. The campaign symbolizes the collective impact we can have when we choose to give boldly and dream generationally.”
